If you haven’t heard recently, we (the RISD community) now have an alumni chapter in Hawaii. As of now, it currently is being led up by Melissa Rivera ID ’01/MAT ’05, with the help of Mariko Merritt ’05 GD, Mark Osman ’98, and Jamie Allen ’05 IL.
These alums are located on the island of Oahu, but we know there are more among the other islands. Please keep an eye out for their Facebook page and if you know of any other alumni in the area, spread the word. Alumni relations hopes to get in touch with more and share news in RISD XYZ to get the word out.
I was very happy and fortunate to be greeted with enthusiasm by these alums. Helping kick start a chapter out here was very easy, mostly due to the important feedback I gained from our first meet-up. It was great to hear about the art and design community in Hawaii, along with the desire to connect with other alumni. We talked about what type of events can be supported and the frequency of these events.
I think it was most helpful that each alumni knew that it was not their task alone to help keep a club going. I shared my experiences about other clubs with them, and how each one differed in their needs and goals. A club’s success is dependent on supporting the ideas and needs of its members as well as the new connections that it grows.
If you are interested in starting a club, get in touch with Chris Hartley at firstname.lastname@example.org. And if you’d like, send me an email, email@example.com, I’d love to help any way I can and share the good news!
