New Year, New Look!

Hello RISD Alums!

I hope everyone has had an amazing holiday and are enjoying some rest and relaxation before the new year. I am updating my blog with a new design theme, just to have a bit of change.

Here’s a recap of recent events, accomplishments, news  and what’s happening within the RISD community.

January 2013 We kicked off the new year with planning of events! We prepared for our opening reception of our 4th Alumni Exhibition, RADIUS, juried by Bunny Harvey, MFA PT ’72, MAT ’71, BFA PT ’67. Gansett Beer generously donated beverages.

February 2013 The RI Club collaborated with local business Ladyfingers Letterpress. The Valentine’s Day themed event, Some Day My Prints Will Come,  was located in the Hope Artiste Village. Ladyfingers Letterpress offers luxuriously designed wedding invitations and stationery and is excited to open their doors to RISD Alumni. Owners Arley-Rose Torsone and Morgan Calderini, PR ’08, were on hand to help create a letterpress printed valentine to take home. Wine and bubbly were graciously donated by Campus Fine Wines.

March 2013 This month marks this blog being active for 3 years and counting! This is my very first blog and I cannot believe the amazing things I’ve gotten to share and be part of through the Rhode Island Alumni Club and RISD community.

April 2013 No one really likes Tax season, but we all loved Life After Taxes an event sponsored by fellow RISD Alumna, Melinda Rainsberger FAV ’04, and her company They’re Using Tools. First 15 alums receive a drink on the house at The Avery. We gathered with cheer, great conversation and yummy pretzels made by local Foremost Baking.

May 2013 What better way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo than with some beer, hanging with local alumni, AND chowing down on nachos, chips + salsa + guacamole. We kickstarted our RISD Brew Tour with Foolproof Brewing Company, located at 241 Grotto Avenue, Pawtucket, RI. Foolproof Brewing Company brews all its beers  in Rhode Island and was founded by local Rhode Islander, Nick Garrison. We are thrilled to have them as partners in our alumni events!

RISD ISB Renovation: On Thursday, May 30, RISD hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to launch the three-year construction project for the renovation of its illustration studies building. RISD’s illustration department has been housed in a former chemical and dye plant, located on 55 Canal, since 1979. The building, which was built in 1848, was last renovated in 1967. It is one of our most popular majors among students.

Some personal news: I got engaged! Wedding planning in RI 2014, commence!

June 2013  RISD Commencement takes place and we celebrated Tamara Kaplan ’00 MAT/MAE as the Commencement Alumni Award Recipient. This was also the first year to graduate RISD/Brown Dual Degree students. Many RI alums took part in volunteering at Clusterfun and week-long Commencement activities.

July 2013 through August 2013 Our RI Club took a much needed break after such a busy Spring time.

September 2013 RISD welcomed a new group of students,  Class of 2017. They were very excited to get started. RI alums helped greet and share good cheer during Orientation and at the Block Party.

Some personal news: I was promoted to Assistant Director at RISD Admissions. I will continue with my responsibilities as an Admissions Officer, and will focus on international recruitment and growing alumni relationships for future events. I traveled to Hong Kong, S. Korea and Singapore and met with amazing students and local alumni. This trip was a major success due to the help from local alumni. I was warmly welcomed and they helped make sure I could get around easily and really shared their culture and home.

November 2013 The RISD Community took part in donating to the Amos House for the Thanksgiving season.

December 2013 We’ve already begun planning for 2014! It includes a juried Alumni exhibition!
